History
and Background
The
College of Education has been a leader throughout the
nation in preparing students to become teachers in the
public schools since 1909 when the State Legislature
of Oklahoma passed an act providing for the creation
and location of Northeastern State Normal School at
Tahlequah. The educational program of the school consisted
of four years of high school and two years of college
level study.
When
the Normal School was changed to Northeastern State
Teachers College in 1919, a four-year curriculum leading
to the bachelor's degree was established. The College
of Education broadened its curriculum in the 1950s when
a fifth-year program designed to prepare master teachers
for elementary and secondary schools was established.
By
the early 1970s the functions of the institution had
been broadened to include degree options in the field
of teacher education at both the baccalaureate and master's
degree levels. During the 2000-2001 academic year, the
College of Education ranked as the number one producer
of teachers being employed in the public schools in
Oklahoma.
